2. Cherry Hill Park

Cherry Hill Park RV Resort. Top 10 Unique RV Parks in America

There is so much history to be seen in Washington D.C. and this RV resort is only about twelve miles away from the National Mall where you can visit the national memorials and make this camping trip about more than just relaxing. Take a day to observe the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform and the monuments honoring pivotal figures in the formation of our great country. In fact, the RV Park itself has their own bus that you can book for a tour, so you won’t even have to drive yourself to the National Mall and worry about desperately looking for or paying for parking. There is an extra cost associated with this, but the resort website is very thorough on many other options to get to the National Mall without your own car and around the National Mall for much less.

If you have an RV and want your family to have the special experience of seeing all the historical landmarks and memorials that D.C. has to offer in addition to a fun-filled family vacation, opt for Cherry Hill Park over hotels in the D.C. area. 3. Paradise Shores

There are three separate horseback riding stations with helpful guides for any experience level. The best part is that you can enjoy the wilderness of the desert and still have restaurants, grocery, and other necessities only four miles away in Kanab, UT. Dark Sky Campground. Top 10 Unique RV Parks in the USA

While the park is not specifically geared toward children (no pool, splash pad, playground, etc.), they do have a 75 foot zipline and a Dig Pit where kids can dig for buried animal bones and treasure. This campground is fairly new and is owned by a couple families who took a leap of faith to start this campground where campers can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and still have access to some of the luxurious comforts of home. Laundry facilities can be paid for using Venmo, there are shade structures at every site, fantastic Wifi and cell service through the whole park, and even coffee and tea at the community sitting area. Customers have been giving this park rave reviews, which means that it might be extra popular and hard to book very soon, so check it out as soon as possible.

5. Ingall's Homestead

Ingalls Homestead 1. Top 10 Unique RV Campgrounds in America

This camping destination is very unique because it is the actual homestead of the famous author, Laura Ingalls Wilder and gives campers the chance to experience some of the activities she might have engaged in like wagon rides, washing clothes with a washboard, making a jump rope and corn cob dolls. This property does not have a ton of traditional RV resort bells and whistles like a pool, hot tub, dog park, laundry facilities, dining onsite, etc. The owners have tried to keep the spirit of the property as it was when Laura Ingalls Wilder lived there, so much of the property is a little more rustic than most RV resorts.

Onsite Amenities:

  • Covered Wagon Ride
  • Hay Twisting and Wheat Grinding Lessons
  • Drive a Pony Cart
  • Washing Clothes (old-fashioned style)
  • Make a Jump Rope Lesson
  • Building Corn Cob Dolls
  • Experience a Pioneer School Day
  • Firewood $7 a bundle
  • Simple bathroom and shower facilities

Local Attractions:

  • Restaurants and grocery
  • Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society
  • The Loftus Store (written about in book)
  • The Depot Museum
  • Wilder Welcome Center & Prairie Bus Tour
  • Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant
  • Old Settler's Day
  • Harvey Dunn Plein Air Paint Out

There is no food service on the property, but with restaurants and grocery stores just a mile away in De Smet, any food items you forgot can be easily found in town. You can really dip your food into history if you’re in town at the right time to catch the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant and Old Settler’s Day, and of course enjoy many Laura Ingalls Wilder related attractions around town any time. The property is closed for the winter, but you can still call for information and reservations through the winter. The homestead only has four RV pads, but they also have four covered wagons for rent, one bunkhouse, or you can tent camp on the open prairie. While it may seem like it’s difficult to get an RV spot, most people take a day trip to the homestead and the RV sites typically do not book up months in advance, so if you reserve early enough, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a spot.

6. Bella Terra of Gulf Shores

Bella Terra Resort. Top 10 Most Unique RV Camping Spots in the USA

Bella Terra purports to be one of the Top 5 Class A RV Resorts in the country and Google, Yelp, and Campground review sites bear out that claim. This place leaves the term glamping in the dust, so be prepared for the red carpet treatment when you stay here. The grounds are meticulously maintained with lush foliage and open space for enjoying a nice day. No matter which site you get, lake views can be had from almost anywhere on the property. You can rent sites short-term or you can own an RV pad here and live there year-round, essentially living the resort lifestyle indefinitely. And if you decide you want to go on the road for a while and explore, you can choose to rent out your RV pad to cover some expense while you’re gone; lot owners receive 60 percent of rental proceeds and the rental process is professionally managed like a rental condo or hotel would be, so owners do not have to worry. This resort is restricted to Class A RVs, at least 32 feet in length, and no older than 15 years at the time of arrival, so before you book, make sure you have a qualifying RV.

The beach is only a 30 min drive from town and is surrounded by so many interesting attractions like a zoo, historical memorials, nature preserves and attractions, and numerous golf courses. If you’ve got the right type of RV, make this a definite stop in your adventure planning.

7. Miami Everglades RV Resort

Miami Everglades RV Resort> Top Unique RV Parks in the USA

The Miami Everglades is such a unique attraction and by staying at this resort, you can explore it with any number of touring companies easily because it’s only a 10-mile drive from the resort. While it doesn’t offer quite as many kid-friendly amenities and activities as some other resorts, it can still be a very family friendly resort with Miami Beach just 30 miles away. Many of the activities and services provided at this resort are geared more toward Seniors, but they still provide fun things for children like mini golf, a playground, outdoor yard games, and a pool.

Monthly and yearly stays are allowed, but electricity is an additional charge with stays like these. RV pads at this resort are very close together and all the amenities are grouped together near the front of the resort, so you may want to bring a bike to get around the property (golf carts are not allowed). Pets are welcome with the exception of pitbulls due to a county ban on this breed, and only two pets are allowed at each site, but keep in mind that they must always be on leash and there is no fenced dog park for them to run free. Wifi is also not included in the price of the stay; it is an additional charge that you can purchase by the day, week, or month.

Some of the RV sites are unique here because they are just grass as opposed to tracking in gravel to your RV with the standard gravel pads in many other resorts. The best part about this resort is that you get a lot of benefits for a lower rate, the convenience of beaches close by, and lots of attractions in the Miami area. Some of the amenities may not be as flashy as other resorts, but the rates coupled with the location in Miami and the simple, but vital services offered will make you feel at home and on vacation all at the same time.

8. Lake Rudolph Campground and RV Resort

Lake Rudolph Resort. Top 10 Unique RV Resorts In The USA

One of the most unique things about this RV resort is that the entire place is themed around Christmas. Street names and building names all have some kind of Christmas-related name that will get you wishing for Christmas in the middle of your summer vacation. The property is huge and there are so many choices in terms of RV sites, spread all over the property. They have standard RV sites, 30 amp only, and 30/50 amp sites. The main attractions, like the water park and play pool, are located right in the middle of the property, and because they understand the size of the property, they have a parking lot in front of the water park in case you don’t want to walk. They even rent out golf carts if you want an easy, smaller sized mode of transportation to get to the resort amenities. They have their own lake where you can fish and paddle board, walking trails, mini golf, and lots of fun activities in Prancer’s Activity Center.

Lake Rudolph Resort. 10 Unique RV Campgrounds you should visit.

Another must see is Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari, something that is more than a water park and includes multiple water slides, splash playground, actual roller coasters, incredible Christmas shopping, and even shows. Lake Rudolph Campground and RV Resort is one of the most kid-friendly RV resorts out there and also speaks to the adult whose favorite holiday is Christmas. If you want to use the campground water park, book during the summer because the waterpark feature is only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year, but even if you book in the winter months, there is still a ton of stuff to do in the campground and in the surrounding area, so go get your Christmas on any time of the year at Lake Rudolph Campground and RV Resort.

Even if you don’t get lucky enough to snag a spot with a water view, non-water’s edge sites are all a very short walk to the lake. This resort can be a short retreat with daily, weekly, and monthly rentals or a home with site ownership. Waters Edge is a very active community of people who love to be in community. A great way to see this in action is to look through one of their newsletters. It’s simple, but captures the fun times and memories that were made in the month’s activities. In addition to onsite activities, local attractions afford residents and visitors lots to do and see, including museums, nature adventures, sports, and of course beaches! The resort does warn that alligators like to cool off in their pond, so always be aware of your surroundings when walking the property, especially near the edge of the water.

This resort does not have gobs of amenities like a pool, hot tub, restaurant, and spa facilities, but that’s the way they like it. More amenities means higher prices and this resort is perfect for the RVer or retiree who just wants an inexpensive place to bed down and do their own thing while still enjoying a strong sense of community. The information on the website describes the feel of the resort beautifully: “Water’s Edge is not a typical ‘campground’ nor is it a high-end resort with snob appeal. It is a comfortable, attractive RV park with modest facilities, friendly residents, and a bright future.”

10. Venture In RV Resort

Venture In RV Resort. Top 10 Unique RV Campgrounds in the USA

This is one of the best RV resorts you can find when trying to escape the heat of the hot summer months. The climate in the White Mountains of Arizona is 20-30 degrees cooler than the Phoenix and Tucson areas, and while people scoff at the expression “it’s a dry heat,” the dryness of the climate here really does make a difference. Outdoor fun in warm climates is always better when it doesn’t feel like a perpetual steam room. And this resort has so many activities, it might be hard to know where to start. There are amenities and activities to keep you active, like shuffleboard, line dancing, and a fitness center and other great community building activities like cards, bingo, ice cream, coffee and donut socials, potlucks, movie nights, arts and crafts and so much more. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are many great fishing lakes and streams nearby and horseback riding stables. While the resort does not feature an onsite pool or hot tub, these amenities are available offsite at the Show Low Aquatic Center.

It is a fairly large resort and all the amenities are located in the middle of the property. They do not provide golf cart rentals, but they do allow both electric and gas powered golf carts in order to move around the property; you must be a licensed driver to drive golf carts around the property. There are certain sites that will not accommodate pets, but the ones that do have a two-pet limit. Conveniently, there is also a dog groomer and veterinary clinic just down the road from the resort so your furry friends will always be taken care of. Wifi is available for free in certain community locations on the property, but if you would like internet connection at your site, there is an additional fee for that convenience.

The city of Show Low is large, and access to all the normal chain stores and necessities are just a short drive away, but the resort is positioned in a place where it feels like you’re roughing it a little because it’s surrounded by trees and the majority of the immediate community is residential. The resort is only open from April 1 to Nov. 30, so treat this resort as a heat getaway lasting several months and opt for other resorts in the Phoenix metro area that are open year round during the winter months. There are other RV resorts in the high country (Show Low, Greer, Chino Valley, Prescott, etc.) that are open even through the winter, but you may have to endure some snow and certainly colder temperatures than the Phoenix valley, so consider moving closer to the big city to enjoy mild weather during the winter months.

Honorable Mentions

Because camping has taken on a whole other look nowadays, we thought there were some resorts that deserved an honorable mention for uniqueness even though they do not accommodate RVs. Let’s face it, sometimes full-time RVers want to get away from their RV just like home-owners want a getaway from their house. The following honorable mentions will provide you with the out-of-the-box getaway of a lifetime!

Conestoga Ranch

Conestoga Ranch Resort. Top 10 Unique Camping Resorts in the USA

The term “conestoga” refers to freight wagons that used to carry supplies cross country before train lines were built. Picture the covered prairie wagon and pioneers crossing the country; those people-moving wagon designs were taken from the design of the conestoga wagon. At Conestoga Ranch, you can rent either a Conestoga wagon that sleeps up to six people or a luxury tent that sleeps two, four, or six people. And when they say luxury tents, they mean it. Each comes equipped with a hotel grade bed and linens, bathroom and shower, electricity, hand-picked rustic furnishings, fire pit, and some even have a claw-foot soaker tub and mini fridge. You will not feel like you’re camping when enjoying the luxury of a wagon or tent, but you will feel all the feelings most campers enjoy when they step into the great outdoors. Certain tents are located on a hillside where stunning lake views can be enjoyed. Large groups and family reunions can easily be accommodated here; in fact, if you book far enough in advance, you can reserve the entire resort for your group getaway.

Out 'n' About Treehouse Treesort

Out n About Treesort. Top 10 Unique Camping Experiences in America

Remember that Swiss Family Robinson movie from way back, when they were shipwrecked and created a house in the trees? Which kid back then didn’t want to live in a house like that? Well, now you can experience something like that at Out ‘n’ About Treehouse Treesort. This very unique getaway features treehouses from only a few feet off the ground to 47 feet off the ground and there are nearly 20 choices of treehouse styles. However, there are currently only five treehouse types that have been approved by the county for overnight use, so be sure to book early since overnight choices are limited. The pool they have is really a natural stream or freshwater lagoon where you can cool off or just sit and enjoy nature. Their primary onsite activities are horseback riding, zipline, and a giant tarzan swing, some of which require an extra fee to participate.

In the main season (April-November), a full breakfast is available in the main lodge as well as a phone and wifi. There are barbeques, microwaves, and stovetops in designated places on the property. Not every treehouse unit has every convenience of home. Some do not include their own private toilets and some do, so if this feature is important to you, make sure you check to see that the unit you are renting has an attached bathroom; otherwise, you’ll be heading outside and down the treehouse steps to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

A couple other interesting features about this resort is their Lilly Pad treehouse and their 420 treehouses. The Lilly Pad treehouse is located 1.2 miles away from the main lodge and is a perfect place for a romantic, more secluded getaway; it features it’s own bathroom with hot water, toilet, sink, refrigerator, fold away table and chairs and can sleep up to four people. The 420 treehouses are located on a legal medical marajuna grow site and overlook the grow fields. There is easy access to bathrooms, a queen bed, and sit 35 feet off the ground with spectacular views of the field. They are also looking to provide tours of the grow operation in the future.

Outside of the awesomeness of the resort itself, there’s plenty to see in the surrounding community as well, so don’t be afraid to make your stay longer; you will not be starving for fun, family activities.

If you are a lover of the earth and want to be as environmentally conscious as possible, this may be the getaway for you. The owners of this resort have a steadfast commitment to leaving the smallest possible footprint on the earth and their Our Story page proves they really are serious about this commitment. They do not allow non-booked patrons to tour the property in the interests of privacy for their paying guests, but they have provided stunning, well-made videos that will give you a very good sense of how spectacular the property and the beauty of the surrounding area is.

They allow tent camping with your own tent (which is the cheapest option), but they also have yurts for rent which are basically glampified tents with a hotel grade bed, small couch, table/chairs, small sink, and a small heater. There is also a small deck on each one with chairs so you can enjoy the ocean views any time you want to. The most interesting lodging options at this resort are the Human Nest and the Twig Hut. These are non-weather proof wood creations that make you feel like you have stumbled onto an improvised shelter in the wilderness. Both of these options are definitely out-of-the-box lodging experiences, but beware that rain will not be kept out (so you’ll want to bring your own tent in case of inclement weather) and local wildlife can easily join you during your stay, so keep that in mind when considering these options.
